My Video Lessons Help You Embrace Your Messy Gap!

Most of my time is spent learning & practicing so that I will be able to make something that I like.

I create exercises to teach myself what I need to know to make something that I like.
I discover new questions and explore my enamel questions.

I make samples that will teach me ONE THING.
I let go of needing to like them.
I PLAY in my messy GAP!

Your OUTER world affects your INNER world.

Your INNER world affects your OUTER world.

You are always using BOTH types of skills.

Enameling Skills

You do not need to be incredibly skilled to make beautiful enamel artwork. Your skills need to be "good enough" for you to achieve both the technical and artistic goals that you imagine. A piece heavy on skill and light on expression can be boring. I want to help you discover what skills you may need and become good enough to feel confident in your ability to make what you imagine.

Celebrate the magical and mysterious!

Enameling is an Adventure.
Embrace the uncertainty.

Hold your imagination in your hand!

Transform your ideas into enamel reality

This is for you if you want :
  • an exciting adventure into the unknown
  • to be encouraged to ask more questions instead of searching for the right answer
  • to enjoy feeling confident enough to "just try it" to see what happens
  • to discover what you like instead of trying to make something that is good
  • to risk making a mess while stepping outside of your comfort zone
  • to create the projects that will move you towards achieving your artistic goals
This is not for you if you need:
  • the security that if you follow the directions then you will succeed
  • your teacher to give you the one right answer
  • to know that you will get the right results when you follow the directions
  • to be sure that you will like everything that you make
  • to always be sure that you will be successful
  • to collect techniques, materials, and tools with the hope and belief that these will be enough to make your artwork better.

My video Classes & Lessons are designed to help you FIND YOUR WAY!
Find Your Way to become an Enamel Artist.

I found a few expert teachers who could show me the technical skills to make the enamel jewelry that I imagined. And then I practiced and practiced some more. I made the practice fun and I challenged myself. I asked myself lots of questions and used enamel to explore my questions. I looked at enameling and art as something that I was and not just something that I did.

  • Learn Basic Skills
  • Understand Enamel Science
  • Develop your own Enamel Language
  • Practice translating Images and Ideas into Enamel Reality
  • Explore and Discover what you want to say with your skills
  • Figure out what holds you back and create a plan that helps you succeed
What are you holding onto?
Challenge yourself to let go of your fears and a need to...

When you begin to let go, there is space for you to pay attention.

You can be in the moment: and notice what you see and feel.

Because you are not listening to your inner critic, you can listen to the questions about what is happening and what is possible.

You can learn to trust yourself.

  • know the Right Way and the Right Answer
  • know where the piece is going and what it will look like
  • be Perfect
  • know the Right Place to start
  • be skilled when you are just beginning to learn
  • Like everything that you make
Would you like to be...
Enamel Confident?

To make something that I love, I need to be able to trust in my abilities and let go of my fears.

I've created Enamel Adventures that challenge you to trust and let go.

It's not always easy; most of us have been taught to find the "right answers" and the "right way". Those are someone else's ANSWERS.

When you feel comfortable exploring your QUESTIONS, you are on the path to Enamel Confidence!

  • Skills and Knowledge to make what you imagine.
  • Creative Mindset that changes each task into an exciting learning adventure.
  • Empowerment to discover and explore YOUR way.
  • Belief that "Yes, I can do it!"

Get MESSY with Ricky

Classes and Lessons that encourage you to just start and "get messy".

We often learn best when we give ourselves permission to fail!

Will it work? Yes, everything works. You will get a result that you may or may not like or want.

The way to learn something on a deep level is to try it and see what happens.

You do not need to LIKE everything that you make ; you will often learn much more by making something that you don't like. In fact, you may not even know what you like or want until you make something that you don't like or want.

Just start somewhere.

You already have these powers. Integrate them into your enameling.

Lessons that engage & improve your Creative Mindset skills

The skill to SEE
Can you see the lines, shapes, patterns, colors, and value?
Can you see how your actions create changes?
If you can't see it, you can't change it.
The skill to IMAGINE
A power unique to humans; think about what is not there, but is possible.
The skill to ASK QUESTIONS
Be curious and ask yourself questions. Create exercises to help find possible answers. Discover more questions.
The skill to RESPOND
Can you go beyond "I like it or I don't like it"? How does it make you feel?
The skill to PLAN
How are you going to get to your goal? Do you need a plan? How flexible can you be?
The skill to CHOOSE
Take responsibility and make a choice. You will make disappointing choices. Get over it.
The skill to ACT
Thinking about it is not enough. Get off you butt and do it.
The skill to EVALUATE
What results did you get, how did you get them, do you want them, and what can you change?

My unique approach to enamel video
Copying a technique is just one part of the learning process. My video lessons show you...

Each video challenges you to move beyond COPYING and Find Your Way to learn the skills that you need to answer YOUR questions.

  • I show you how I do it! And sometimes the many ways that I have done it.
  • I share what I am doing from the "inside-out"; what am I seeing, feeling, doing, and asking myself? Because this is similar to how you will experience doing it.
  • I challenge you to find your way so that you can explore YOUR questions, not mine.
If you ask the same questions, you get the same results.
Enameling becomes an Adventure when you don't always know where you are going!
PLAY

What is possible?

  • show you the "right way" or give you the "right answer"
  • give you the "right colors" to use

Where Students Make Artistic Changes

"I have taken lots of classes and am a collector of technique and information.  I take a class, get excited, go home and then I get stalled.  As long as I have an “assignment” and apply the technique I have learned, I am moving forward.  My problem has been to be able to create the project or assignment once I get home...

"The freedom to experiment gave me the biggest push. Finally I wasn't stymied by the fear of not making something I liked. I was allowed not to like it at all; just practice and learn. And so I learned…week by week until I loved turning the kiln on and looked forward to playing, actually playing, with my colors. Me, who is so often afraid to begin because I know I will fail, was day after day, turning on the kiln, and just having fun, observing, adjusting, smiling, and creating. • your artwork is not authentic?
  • you want to avoid the studio?

  • you will never figure it out?
  • you are not "good enough"?
  • you have learned some skills but don't know what to do

Imagine if you had more CONFIDENCE
LEARN NEW SKILLS

Do you want to learn a few new skills: transparent color, cloisonne´, or foil layers? Firing with a torch or kiln? Finishing your pieces?

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS

Do you want to get "better" or "good enough" to feel like you have the ability to make something that you love?

UNDERSTAND ENAMEL SCIENCE

Are you sometimes confused about why you got a specific result? Was it you or something else?

LET GO OF RULES AND FEARS

Do you want to play and feel free with your enamel color? What is holding you back? How do you limit yourself? Step out of your comfort zones and use your "inner child" to explore enameling.

MAKE SOMETHING YOU LIKE

Tired of making "spin art" enamels where you hope that it turns out good? Use what you know and be intentional while making a piece that please you.

MAKE SOMETHING MEANINGFUL

What makes your enamels different from everyone else's? Are you putting a part of yourself into each piece? Make enamels that come from your heart.

Heat bonds the enamel to the metal.
Understanding the science behind it can be challenging
Enamel Science

Each time that you HEAT your piece it changes.
Each firing affects both the newly-added and the previously-fired enamel.

Understand the role of science and apply it to help you achieve the results that you like and want.

  • Thermal Expansion & Contraction: What is "counter-enamel" and when/why do I need this?
  • Copper & Firescale: How clean does my metal need to be before I enamel on it? Does this need to be as tedious as the books say?
  • Color, Transparency, & Air Bubbles: Why does my transparent color layer look cloudy and how can I achieve greater clarity?
  • Firing Time & Temperature: Is there a right way to do this? How can I control my firing results?
Meet Ricky Frank

I hope that you will love enameling as much as I do!

I've been enameling since 1976. I had no experience when I began so most of what I know comes from experience: play, experimenting, and lots of "failures" that taught me the most.

I combine a background in athletics, sport psychology, creativity, and learning theory with my passion for being outdoors at the beach or in the mountains. Enameling enables me to create my own miniature worlds of color, layers, and light to capture and express those outdoor moments that move me.

I've created and sold my cloisonne´enamel jewelry for over 45 years and taught enameling classes for over 20 years. I love the personal connections that are formed in the classroom and search for innovative ways to capture that experience using my online classrooms.

Explore your questions

\When I first started watching your videos, I kept thinking why is he asking "why" all the time? Well, you have me hooked.  I'm finding myself thinking about "why and why not" all the time now, and all the possibilities that asking that leads to.

Margaret G.
Do you get stuck after the class?

"I have taken lots of classes and am a collector of technique and information.  I take a class, get excited, go home and then I get stalled.  As long as I have an “assignment” and apply the technique I have learned, I am moving forward.  My problem has been to be able to create the project or assignment once I get home.

Diane B.
Do you want to be given the fish or learn to fish?

The emphasis on personal responsibility to make artistic decisions for the work done is so much more instructive than simply taking a 'project course' and working to take home one pretty item.

Terry B.
Learning is a process of teaching yourself.

His approach is  "Here's what I know, what I do and how I do it, but it was a process for me and it'll be a process for you."  He teaches you how to answer your own questions.  Every lesson isn't just instructional, it's inspiring, liberating and empowering.

Trish M.
I am using the same skills.
But...I am asking different questions.

What are YOU focusing on?
What are you trying to learn?
What will make a CHANGE?

I learned some BASIC skills:
How to use & control enamel, wires, and foils.

And then I changed my questions.
From "How-to?" to "Why do I care?"

Instead of collecting new techniques,
I now collect images that come from my heart.

WHAT IF YOU COULD HOLD YOUR IMAGINATION IN YOUR HAND!

Transform your IDEAS into ENAMEL REALITY

Practice asking questions & making decisions.
Students often ask me:
"How do you DECIDE?"

I make LOTS of stuff.
Most of it is not very good.
But I learn how to make it BAD, so that I can learn what I like and dislike.

Some of my questions while enameling...

  • Color or Value?
  • Opaque or Transparent?
  • More or less? Why?
  • Do I like it more or less?
  • What can I change?
  • How much do I care?
