Ricky's Enamel AdventureS
Explore and Discover with Enamel
Most of my time is spent learning & practicing so that I will be able to make something that I like.
I create exercises to teach myself what I need to know to make something that I like.
I discover new questions and explore my enamel questions.
I make samples that will teach me ONE THING.
I let go of needing to like them.
I PLAY in my messy GAP!

You do not need to be incredibly skilled to make beautiful enamel artwork. Your skills need to be "good enough" for you to achieve both the technical and artistic goals that you imagine. A piece heavy on skill and light on expression can be boring. I want to help you discover what skills you may need and become good enough to feel confident in your ability to make what you imagine.

I found a few expert teachers who could show me the technical skills to make the enamel jewelry that I imagined. And then I practiced and practiced some more. I made the practice fun and I challenged myself. I asked myself lots of questions and used enamel to explore my questions. I looked at enameling and art as something that I was and not just something that I did.
When you begin to let go, there is space for you to pay attention.
You can be in the moment: and notice what you see and feel.
Because you are not listening to your inner critic, you can listen to the questions about what is happening and what is possible.
You can learn to trust yourself.
To make something that I love, I need to be able to trust in my abilities and let go of my fears.
I've created Enamel Adventures that challenge you to trust and let go.
It's not always easy; most of us have been taught to find the "right answers" and the "right way". Those are someone else's ANSWERS.

What is possible?
What do I like and dislike?
What variables affect my results?
How can I control my variables?
What do I see?
How can I imagine it in enamel?
Which design elements (lines, shapes, patterns, color, and value)?
How can I arrange and combine them?
Video that gives you a close-up and personal view of the process. Not only do I show you WHAT I am doing, but I explain what I SEE, what I FEEL, what I am ASKING myself, and how my GOAL will affect what I do and what I need to change.
"I have taken lots of classes and am a collector of technique and information. I take a class, get excited, go home and then I get stalled. As long as I have an “assignment” and apply the technique I have learned, I am moving forward. My problem has been to be able to create the project or assignment once I get home...

"The freedom to experiment gave me the biggest push. Finally I wasn't stymied by the fear of not making something I liked. I was allowed not to like it at all; just practice and learn. And so I learned…week by week until I loved turning the kiln on and looked forward to playing, actually playing, with my colors. Me, who is so often afraid to begin because I know I will fail, was day after day, turning on the kiln, and just having fun, observing, adjusting, smiling, and creating. " Click below to read more...

Each time that you HEAT your piece it changes.
Each firing affects both the newly-added and the previously-fired enamel.
Understand the role of science and apply it to help you achieve the results that you like and want.
I hope that you will love enameling as much as I do!
I've been enameling since 1976. I had no experience when I began so most of what I know comes from experience: play, experimenting, and lots of "failures" that taught me the most.
I combine a background in athletics, sport psychology, creativity, and learning theory with my passion for being outdoors at the beach or in the mountains. Enameling enables me to create my own miniature worlds of color, layers, and light to capture and express those outdoor moments that move me.
I've created and sold my cloisonne´enamel jewelry for over 45 years and taught enameling classes for over 20 years. I love the personal connections that are formed in the classroom and search for innovative ways to capture that experience using my online classrooms.
What are YOU focusing on?
What are you trying to learn?
What will make a CHANGE?
I learned some BASIC skills:
How to use & control enamel, wires, and foils.
And then I changed my questions.
From "How-to?" to "Why do I care?"
Instead of collecting new techniques,
I now collect images that come from my heart.
I make LOTS of stuff.
Most of it is not very good.
But I learn how to make it BAD, so that I can learn what I like and dislike.
Some of my questions while enameling...
