The Skills Are Simpler Than You Think

When I first started enameling,

I didn’t know much.

I could cut out a copper shape

  • Sift and fire a layer of enamel
  • Maybe add a wire
  • Paint a layer of enamel color
  • Fire it until it melted.

That was enough.

Over time, I refined those same simple skills.

But even now — decades later —

I’m still using the same foundational actions.

The tools haven’t changed much.

What’s changed is how I use them.

It’s not the skills you have.

It’s how you use them.

Enameling Skills we learn & practice here

Simple Skills
The Skills Are Simpler Than You Think

You don’t need endless new techniques to begin.

You need enough skill to make a mark…
and the willingness to take a next step.

Because in the end—
It’s not the skills you have.
It’s how you use them.

  • Prepare your materials
  • Apply your materials
  • Fire your materials

Becoming comfortable exploring what’s possible: making and controlling enamel marks, noticing relationships, and discovering preferences.

Expression Confidence

Expression Confidence

Using what you know about enamel to explore something that matters — letting an enamel voice begin to emerge.

Checklist

Include a list of items to support the central theme of your page. Bulleted lists are a great way to parse information into digestible pieces.

Enamel Confidence is:
  • Trusting yourself to take a small next step
  • Using skills to explore, not just execute
  • Paying attention to what you’re curious about
  • Turning curiosity into simple enamel studies
  • Learning from results without judging them
  • Practicing even when the outcome is uncertain
  • Making decisions without waiting for permission
  • Building confidence through experience
Enamel Confidence is not:
  • Following step-by-step projects
  • Copying a teacher’s image or recipe
  • Waiting to feel ready or certain
  • Chasing perfect or impressive results
  • Believing there is one “right” way
  • Judging results as success or failure
  • Relying on external approval
  • Needing someone to tell you what to do
What Does
“How You Use Them” Actually Mean?
